Robust Coffee Lounge on Chicago’s Best – Tune in on March 18th

Presidents’ Day may have been a public holiday, but Shrine faithful, friends, and even a visiting Canon were hard at work as extras on the set, as the television show “Chicago’s Best” filmed at truly Chicago’s best coffee shop, our good neighbor Robust Coffee Lounge. Thank you to Robust owner Jake Sapstein for kindly inviting us all! Tune in to WGN at 10pm (CST) on Sunday, March 18th to see the show!

Special Announcement from Kennedy-King College

Our neighbor Kennedy-King College’s film students were back at the Shrine making a follow-up to the video they produced last winter as a part of Landmarks Illinois’ “People Saving Places” video project. On Wednesday, December 6th, Kennedy-King College hosted two screenings of the new video! We will share the inspiring new video with you as soon it is available. In the meantime, we couldn’t wait to share Professor Enid Wells’ surprise announcement after the screenings: Kennedy-King’s film students will make a video on the Shrine’s progress each semester until the first mass in the building!!  We are so grateful to Professor Wells, Dean Darby, their students and everyone at Kennedy-King College for their generous support. We are also grateful to Landmarks Illinois for making this wonderful partnership with a local educational institution possible.

Special thanks to Ward Miller of Preservation Chicago and Bill Kenney of the Northern Illinois Historic League along with a number of Shrine faithful and friends for attending the afternoon screening!

PastForward Conference 2017

From November 14-17, the National Trust for Historic Preservation held its annual PastForward conference in Chicago! We were thrilled to welcome an enthusiastic group of 33 conference attendees to the Shrine as part of a field study. That Friday, Bonnie McDonald and Kaitlyn McAvoy of Landmarks Illinois graciously highlighted the Shrine’s continuing partnership with Kennedy King College as a success story during their presentation on the “People Saving Places” video series. It was a wonderful opportunity for networking and to thank, in person, so many people at the National Trust for Historic Preservation from across the country for their continued support of the Shrine.

They Came! They Saw! They Biked!!!

On August 5th, the Chicago Cycling Club stopped by the Shrine on a tour of great South Side architecture! The group enjoyed the Shrine so much that the Cycling Club, in partnership with our friends at the Hyde Park Historical Society, arranged a more in-depth tour with a look at the interior. On September 9th, a sold-out tour of 25 came to #SeeTheShrine and learn more about the restoration work underway! The Chicago Cycling Club is a “friendly, diverse group including a wide range of ages, ethnicities and professions who find common ground in a love of biking”: check their website for more opportunities to ride to the Shrine!
