Thank you so much to our friends at the Northern Illinois Historic League for featuring the Shrine as the cover story of their Inaugural Newsletter! We are grateful for this great coverage and exposure to the NIHL’s network of historical societies and preservation organizations across northern Illinois!
Save the Shrine’s new video is here! Like our anti-demolition video last winter, this was made by Navis Pictures and produced by Regina Magazine. Bringing together 17 Chicago-area businesses, Catholic organizations and Architectural/Preservation foundations in support of the Shrine, this new campaign offers a wide array of thank-you gifts for donations, for giving levels from $30 to $500,000. All much needed and much appreciated! Take a look at the beautifully-designed landing page here: https://reginamag.com/ads/#savetheshrine.
Once the Chicago winter thaws, it will be possible to install the new roof (which is being fabricated now) but we must raise the necessary funds (almost $2 million) to make that happen! Please #ShareTheShrine to help raise the roof!
In response to requests for help from our friends at the St. Adalbert Preservation Society, the Coalition to Save the Shrine recently engaged an investigative reporter to look into the announced sale of the entire campus of St. Adalbert’s in Pilsen, including the church, to the Chicago Academy of Music. To learn more, please visit www.savestadalbertchurch.org.
Join us for Carols and Candles at the Shrine, this Saturday, December 17th from 4-6:30pm! Count down to Christmas with holiday hot chocolate and carol singing before the lighted backdrop of Woodlawn’s iconic stone landmark, plus a Christmas give-away! Please visit the event website here: http://makepeacechicago.org/.
On October 7th, 2015, a devastating fire damaged the Shrine and destroyed its newly-installed roof. This Saturday, the 8th, please come to commemorate the Shrine Fire and celebrate all that has been accomplished in just a year!! Rally at noon: let’s show our commitment to #ShelterTheShrine by making an even larger human chain around the Shrine than last year!!
Looking forward to the Shrine’s future, the schedule for the installation of the new roof will be announced.
This Saturday, the Shrine community will also celebrate the return of the statue of the Christ Child as Infant King to Chicago! Although the statue survived the fire, it nevertheless sustained damage from the heat and smoke, and has now been carefully restored.
The Shrine was featured on the Chicagoist’s list of “23 Architectural Sites You Must See During Open House Chicago”!! Open House Chicago (#OHC2016) is an annual free festival of architecture, organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation: http://openhousechicago.org/. The sites were selected out of over 200 participants and the Shrine was the only church on the list! Plan to visit for hard-hat tours over the weekend of October 15th-16th!
